Understanding and Managing Tic Disorders: The Benefits of Comprehensive Behavioural Intervention for Tics (CBiT)

Tic disorders are neurodevelopmental conditions involving sudden, rapid, and repetitive movements or sounds known as tics. Motor tics may include blinking, facial movements, or shoulder shrugging, while vocal tics can include throat clearing, sniffing, or other sounds. Tics vary in frequency and intensity and may change over time. For some individuals, they have minimal impact; for others, they can affect school, work, relationships, social activities, and emotional well-being.

Comprehensive Behavioural Intervention for Tics (CBiT) is an evidence-based behavioural treatment specifically designed to help individuals manage tics and reduce their impact on daily life. CBiT incorporates cognitive-behavioural strategies and focuses on awareness, coping skills, and practical responses to tics. Importantly, CBiT is not about forcing someone to stop ticcing. Rather, it helps individuals understand their tic patterns and develop greater control over their responses.

Key Components of CBiT

Tic Awareness Training

Individuals learn to recognize their tics, premonitory urges, and situations that may increase or decrease tic frequency. This awareness provides a foundation for developing effective strategies.

Competing Response Training

When an individual recognizes the urge to tic, they learn a specific response that is physically incompatible with the tic. With practice, this may help reduce tic frequency, intensity, or interference.

Stress and Coping Strategies

Stress, excitement, fatigue, and anxiety can sometimes increase tic severity. CBiT may incorporate relaxation and coping strategies to help individuals manage these factors, while recognizing that stress does not cause tic disorders.

Family and Caregiver Education

Families and caregivers learn how to respond supportively, avoid punishment or repeated correction, reduce unnecessary attention to tics, and create an environment that promotes confidence and self-advocacy.

The Goal of CBiT

Success is not necessarily measured by eliminating tics. Because tics naturally wax and wane, treatment often focuses on reducing their impact and helping individuals participate more fully in everyday life. CBiT can help individuals develop confidence, coping skills, and practical strategies for managing tic-related challenges.
