Therapy, Counselling, or Life Coaching: Which One is Right for You?

One of the most common questions we get isn't about a specific problem, it's "which service do I actually need?" Counselling, therapy, and life coaching can sound interchangeable, but they serve different purposes. Choosing the right starting point can save you time and help you get more out of the process. We have a variety of trained professionals to work with here at Mountain Top Counselling and we've taken the time to help you understand who might be the right fit to help you along your journey.
Counselling: Working Through What's Weighing You Down
Counselling is generally the right fit when you're dealing with a specific challenge such as grief, relationship difficulty, anxiety, burnout, a major life transition and you want support processing it and developing tools to move through it. Counselling tends to be:
Present and issue-focused - centered on what's happening in your life right now
Skill-building - you leave sessions with concrete tools for managing emotions, communication, or stress
Time-limited but flexible - some people attend for a few sessions, others for longer-term support
If you're asking "how do I get through this," counselling is usually the starting point.
Therapy: Going Deeper Into Patterns and History
Therapy overlaps closely with counselling, but often goes further into understanding why certain patterns exist. Therapists help you look at history, relationships, and deeper emotional patterns that shape how you experience the present. Therapy can be a good fit when:
The same struggles keep resurfacing across different situations or relationships
You want to understand the roots of a pattern, not just manage its symptoms
You're working through something more complex, like trauma or long-standing mental health concerns
If you're asking "why do I keep ending up here," therapy tends to be the deeper dive.
Life Coaching: Moving Forward With Clarity and Direction
Life coaching is a different kind of support altogether. Rather than focusing on working through emotional difficulty, coaching is future-focused and goal-oriented. It's a strong fit when:
You're generally doing okay emotionally, but feel stuck, unclear, or unmotivated
You have a specific goal such as a career change, better habits, more balance and want accountability and structure to get there
You want an outside perspective to help you set direction and follow through
If you're asking "what's next, and how do I get there," coaching is built for that.
So Then, Which One Do You Need?
Here's a simple way to think about it:
If you're feeling... | You might be looking for... |
Weighed down by something specific happening now | Counselling |
Stuck in patterns you don't fully understand | Therapy |
Emotionally okay, but unclear on direction or goals | Life Coaching |
It's also common to move between services over time. Someone might start with counselling to work through a difficult period, and later shift into coaching once they're ready to focus on growth and forward momentum. There's no wrong door and if you're not sure, that's a completely normal place to start from.
Expressive Arts Therapy: A Different Way In
For some people, especially those who find it hard to put feelings into words, expressive arts therapy offers another path. It uses creative expression (art, movement, writing) alongside talk-based approaches to process emotions that are difficult to access directly through conversation alone.
